Community Seeks Enugu State Governor’s Intervention in Leadership Crisis

The Enu Agu Autonomous Community in Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State is embroiled in a dispute over the recognition of Mr. Sylvester Nnaji as the traditional ruler. The community members, consisting of men, women, and youths, have voiced their opposition to Nnaji’s recognition and have taken their grievances to the state House of Assembly and the state Government House. They are demanding the nullification of Nnaji’s letter of recognition as the Igwe-elect.

The national chairman and secretary of Enu Agu Community, Chief Steven Aninnenji and Hon. Gabriel Edeh, have issued a statement describing the alleged imposition as a violation of the traditional selection process in Enugu State. They have appealed to Governor Peter Mba to constitute a panel of inquiry to ensure justice, rule of law, and equity in the community.

The community members have expressed concern over the alleged actions of Chief Sylvester Nnaji, Mr. Ikenna Ogbodo, and Mike Anike, who are accused of attempting to assume leadership roles without the consent of the community. They are also questioning the representation of the community’s families in the traditional ruler and town union selection process.

The controversy arose after the creation of the Enu Agu Autonomous Community in May 2023. The community, which had not previously had a constituted town union, was in the process of coming together to discuss the selection and installation of the traditional ruler and the constitution of the town union leadership when the dispute emerged.

In response to the protests, the speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, represented by Ede Magnus, a member representing Aninri State Constituency, has promised to intervene for a peaceful resolution. He reassured the community members of their support and pledged to address the issue with the governor to ensure a fair and just outcome.
