The Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a stern warning to the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ites, against staging any form of protest in Abuja or its environs ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on October 1st.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Benedict Igweh, who oversees Zone 7, which includes the FCT and Niger State Police Commands, who addressed the media on the matter, emphasised that the Shi’ite organisation remains banned, and any attempts to protest would be met with severe consequences.
He warned that it would be “suicidal” for any member of the proscribed group to engage in protests during this period.
The AIG, who previously served as the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, revealed that security measures have been strategically strengthened across the capital to prevent any disturbances.
These measures include the deployment of personnel and equipment in key areas to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the Independence Day celebrations.

“The deployment will include Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel, anti-riot equipment, and visibility policing, among others.
“Traffic diversions will be implemented in areas expected to experience large crowds, including Central Area and Eagle Square,” Igweh said.
He further reassured the public that peaceful protests, conducted within the bounds of the law, would be protected. However, Igweh urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
