Institute, Kano State Moves To Address Animal Feeds Scarcity – Official

The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has said that the Kano 20-hectare pasture seed multiplication plot project would be ready by December.

This is contained in a statement by Auwalu Umar, Director of Public Affairs Directorate, ABU, on Wednesday in Zaria.

He said the project was designed to produce pasture seeds to fasttarck establishment of the Dansoshai Grazing Reserve in Kano State.

The statement quoted the Executive Director, NPRI, Prof. Mohammed Rabiu-Hassan, as saying that the project aimed to address acute scarcity of livestock feeds as well as mitigate farmers/herders clashes.

The project, he said was essentially for the establishment and maintenance of 20 hectares pasture seed multiplication plot at Dudduru in Ajingi Local Government Area of Kano state.

“The duration of the project, which started in January 2021, has been billed to be completed in September this year.

“However, it was extended to December 2024, following a request by the Kano State Agricultural Development Project (KSADP).

“The scope of the project includes site mobilisation, fencing of 20 hectares, construction of 40 tube wells, two security rooms as well as construction of two stores for seeds and equipment.

“It also includes seed drying shade, land clearing and preparation, routine pasture management practices and harvesting of plant species such as Gamba, Stylo, and Napier,” it said.
