Nigerian Government Establishes Disaster Relief Fund For National Emergencies

The Nigerian Government has established a Disaster Relief Fund aimed at providing timely assistance during national emergencies.

The Minster of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun said the the fund was a proactive measure to address the growing threat of natural disasters.

Speaking during the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee on Dam Evaluation, Mr. Wale Edun said the Federal Executive Council, FEC emphasized the urgent need for swift action to alleviate the hardships faced by affected communities.

The newly formed committee is tasked with evaluating the structural integrity of Nigeria’s dams and assessing their social and environmental impacts. This comprehensive approach aims to formulate strategies that will mitigate flooding risks across the nation.

Mr. Edun highlighted the government’s proactive measures, noting that funding has already been allocated to all states for implementing flood mitigation strategies earlier this year. He reiterated the significance of the Disaster Relief Fund, which will also involve private sector leadership, as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen national preparedness against the increasing risks posed by climate change.

He maintained that The initiative marks a critical step forward in Nigeria’s commitment to disaster management and infrastructure safety, ensuring that the nation is better equipped to respond to future flooding events.
