Cross River: Commission Pushes Local Government Election to November 2

The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC has shifted the local government council election to November 2, 2024.

The commission also announced a slashed in the cost of nomination forms for councillorship and chairmanship position.

The chairman of CROSIEC, Dr. Ekong Boco made the announcement shortly after a meeting with the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and security operatives in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State southern Nigeria.

Boco stated, “CROSIEC has extended the election date by one week. Initially slated for late October, the Local Government Councils election will now take place on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Campaigns are scheduled to end a day earlier, which is on Friday, November 1, 2024.”

Continuing, the commission’s boss stated, “CROSIEC also resolved to reduce the fees for chairmanship and councillorship positions. The fee for Chairmanship aspirants has been slashed from ₦5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) to ₦1,000,000.00 (One Million Naira). 

“Similarly, the fee for Councillorship aspirants has been reduced from ₦1,000,000.00 (One Million Naira) to ₦200,000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira). This decision aligns with IPAC’s request to Governor Bassey Otu for more affordable nomination fees, in order to encourage broader participation in the electoral process.”

Dr. Boco, who emphasised that the adjustments was aim at promoting fairness and ensure a credible electoral process, urged IPAC and other political stakeholders to take note of the new schedule and the revised conditions for nomination.

He reiterated CROSIEC’s commitment to enhance political engagement and facilitate a smoother election process across the state.
