Anambra: Persons with Disabilities advocate establishment of special courts

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Anambra State have put forth a compelling argument for the establishment of special courts dedicated to handling cases related to disabilities, in a recent workshop organised by the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC) with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) in Awka, the state capital.

PWDs at the workshop stressed the urgent need for specialized courts to protect their rights and ensure the delivery of justice in cases involving persons with disabilities. Despite existing laws and policies aimed at safeguarding PWDs’ rights, many still face discrimination and obstacles in accessing justice due to the lack of disability-friendly features in court facilities.

The call for special courts for disability-related cases is gaining momentum as PWDs continue to advocate for their rights in Anambra State. According to Voice of Nigeria, the establishment of such courts would not only address the challenges faced by PWDs in accessing justice but also ensure accessibility and efficient handling of cases involving persons with disabilities.

In a resolution reached by the group, the creation of special courts was deemed essential to overcome the barriers PWDs face in the justice system. The move is seen as a vital step towards fostering inclusivity and upholding the rights of all individuals in Anambra State.
