A retired Comptroller, Muhammad Bappa has called on officers of the Nigeria Customs Service to brace for the challenges ahead and confront them with determination.

He made this known in an interview with the media following a send-off ceremony organised by the Zonal Coordinator Zone B Kaduna on Tuesday.

Bappa, who last served at the North-Western Marine Command, was commended by Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Sambo Dangaladima for his calm demeanor, hard work, and dedication to duty.

Dangaladima prayed for Bappa’s successful retirement and described him as a friend to all, assuring him of continued friendship and support.

In his remarks, Bappa reflected on his career, saying “he joined the Customs Service in the 1990s and is leaving with his reputation intact.”

He expressed pride in serving without any scandals throughout his career and urged current officers to emulate the same standard of diligence and integrity.

Bappa highlighted the importance of officers working together to combat smuggling and drug trafficking, noting “the partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as a critical aspect of their operations.”

He emphasised the need for improved technology and logistics, especially in marine operations, to effectively tackle smuggling via waterways.

Bappa also touched on the challenges he faced during his service, including inadequate patrol vehicles and the need for advanced IT equipment to combat maritime smuggling.

He encouraged officers to continue safeguarding the nation’s interests and unity.

In his farewell message, Deputy Comptroller Iro Bala, who also retired, was praised as a gentleman always willing to assist others.

ACG Sambo said, the celebration of their retirement marked a new chapter in their lives, with well-wishers hoping for the best as they begin new journey.

The ceremony also acknowledged the appointment of ACG Bamidele Makinde as the Assistant Comptroller-General in charge of Human Resource Development.
