The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned in the recent massacre of at least 16 individuals in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred during the town’s traditional Onwa Asaa festival, was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, leaving families and the community in mourning.
In a statement issued by Dr. Valentine Iyke-Oliobi, the APC Publicity Secretary for Anambra State, the party expressed shock and deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as a horrific act of violence.
The APC extended condolences to the grieving families and the Nibo community, noting the profound impact the killings have had on the town during its sacred festival.
The APC also raised alarm over the deteriorating security situation in Anambra State, stressing that the killings occurred disturbingly close to significant government institutions, including the Governor’s Lodge, the State Police Headquarters, and the State Criminal Investigation Department.
State’s security apparatus
The party questioned the effectiveness of the state’s security apparatus, stating that if these high-security areas are vulnerable, nowhere in the state can be considered safe.
The APC called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation and pursue justice for the victims.
The party also urged the governor to offer immediate support and compensation to the affected families, many of whom have lost their breadwinners.
In light of the increasing wave of violence and insecurity across Anambra, the APC called on Governor Soludo to convene an urgent, non-partisan security summit to devise a practical strategy to address the insecurity.
The APC emphasised the need for all stakeholders to come together to reclaim the state from what it described as “the grip of criminals” and restore peace and safety for its residents.
The party concluded by calling on the people of Anambra to unite in the fight against insecurity, stressing that development is impossible in an environment where fear and lawlessness prevail.
The APC’s statement is a direct challenge to the state government’s handling of security, urging immediate and decisive action to prevent further violence in the state.
