The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has called on media professionals to uphold objectivity in their reporting, emphasizing their critical role in combating the widespread issue of corruption in society.

The ICPC, in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), brought together media professionals nationwide for a training session themed: “The Power Of The Pen In The Fight Against Corruption.”

The ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Aliyu while speaking at a workshop organized in Abuja, emphasized the power of the press in aiding to combat corruption through investigative reporting.

The ICPC is dedicated to fulfilling its mandate under the law. Information is one of our most potent tools, and this is where the media becomes indispensable,” he said.

He encouraged media professionals to continue conducting thorough investigations while maintaining accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in their reporting.

While speaking, the President of, the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Chris Isiguzo commended the efforts of ICPC in fighting corruption and stressed the need to create mechanisms for the safety of journalists.

“While our role in combating corruption is crucial, we cannot ignore the inherent dangers that come with it. The fight against corruption is, in itself, a risky venture.

“Journalists who expose corruption often face threats to their lives, intimidation, harassment, and, in some cases, physical violence.

“The safety and security of journalists must be a top priority if we are to continue this essential work.

“The NUJ, along with our partners, must advocate for stronger protections for journalists who take on the dangerous task of exposing corruption.

“There is an urgent need for laws that not only protect freedom of the press but also ensure that journalists can carry out their duties without fear of retaliation,” Isiguzo said.

The Country Director of the MacArthur Foundation, Dr Kole Shettima, urged the media to expose corruption while highlighting positive stories and individuals making a difference in Nigeria’s fight against it.

Also, the Director of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN, Dr Muhammed Bulama noted that the media is the most successful tool to fight corruption in the country, promising a more robust partnership with ICPC in its fight against corrupt practices.
