The Kano State Independent ElectoralCommission (KANSIEC) says, only six Political parties will participate in Saturday’s local government elections.
The Chairman of KANSIEC, Sani Malumfashi made this known while reacting on the state high court ruling allowing the commission to go ahead with the process.
He said the six political parties have fulfilled all the requirements of the state electoral laws.
The parties include the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Accord Party (AP) National Rescue Movement (NRM), African Action Congress (AAC) and Action Alliance (AA) out of the 19 parties.
Malumfashi explained that, the major opposition party in the state has refused to recognise the commission, it’s activities and participate in any process.
“By law the political party is out of this exercise.
“The six parties paid their required dues, conducted their primary elections and submitted the list of their candidates to the commission.
“This elections is constitutional and Supreme court consolidated that constitutional requirements by ruling that, the only recognized local governments leadership are the elected local governments council leaderships and that, it ordered the federal government and accountant general of the federation not disburse local governments grants to leaders who are not elected. The federal and state Governments have mutual agreements let October be the dateline for all states to conduct their local governments elections.
“And even when some people are concious of the dateline, some people from the state are held bent on truncating the exercise,” he said.
The KANSIEC chairman called on the police to respect the court ruling and ensure that they take part in the elections and provide the needed security during the election.
He called on the adhoc staff of the commission to ensure that they report to their polling stations on time and ensure fairness to those participating in the election.
The KANSIEC chairman also warned against vote buying, bribing of officials, violence and allowing underaged voting to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
