Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, has highlighted the need for proactive measures to address climate change and combat the recurring issue of flooding in the state and nation.
In an interview with Voice of Nigeria at his office in Awka, the state capital, Odimegwu emphasised the importance of robust sensitisation and engagement on environmental protection and sustainability.
Odimegwu outlined key considerations for stakeholders, including promoting massive tree planting, discouraging illegal sand mining, and ensuring proper land documentation for building development.
He stressed that adherence to these measures will help control erosion, enhance food security, and promote ecosystem stability.
The Commissioner also emphasised the significance of Anambra State’s environmental protection law, which mandates the construction of catchment pits and green areas in new residential buildings.
He urged residents, developers, and stakeholders to collaborate with the government to address the challenges posed by natural disasters.
Odimegwu called on the federal government to invest in infrastructure such as dams and river dredging to manage water levels during the rainy season.
He commended emergency service agencies for their prompt response to disaster situations and urged for a more proactive approach in disaster management.
The Commissioner applauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts in addressing environmental challenges in Anambra State.
He also praised the Ministry of Environment for their dedication to safeguarding the environment and ensuring a high quality of living for residents.
