The Managing Director of the organisation, Mr Samuel Ogbodu, said in Lagos on Wednesday that the screening was part of its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals.

Ogbodu said that the programme with the title “Free Mammogram for 100 Women”, is targeted at fighting breast cancer in the country.

The managing director said the initiative was also in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, called ‘Pink October’.

He said that SUNU Nigeria joined the fight against breast cancer as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and commitment to the people.

“SUNU Nigeria which includes SUNU Assurances Plc and SUNU Health believes that discovering breast cancer early is part of the ways to prevent deaths from breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is easier to treat if found early, when it is small and has not spread.

“This is why we are creating awareness and conducting free mammograms for 100 women,” he said.

According to him, the mammogram will be held from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, at DIAMED Centre Lekki Phase 1, in Lagos.

The World Cancer Research Fund International, Nigeria ranks ninth in the world for breast cancer deaths in women, with 16,342 deaths.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Nigeria, accounting for 18.1 per cent of all cancer deaths.

Nigeria also has one of the highest age-standardised mortality rates for breast cancer in the world and the highest in Africa.
