Twenty officers have graduated from the Naval War College Command Level Course Seven with a charge to integrate the experience and leadership skills gained in their different fields.

The Commandant of the Naval War College Nigeria, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, gave the charge at the graduation ceremony in honour of the twenty Nigerian Navy officers within the rank of Commanders and Lieutenant Commanders held at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters in Cross River State, southern Nigeria.

Rear Admiral Ahmed noted that the graduation ceremony signaled the successful completion of the three-week intensive training course, which is the 7th series, since the inception of the college in 2017.

He urged the graduates, “the college has laid a solid professional foundation for you to perform more effectively in the field. You are now better equipped to cope with more of the challenges you are bound to face as you progress in your careers.

“As you go back to the field, you will be required to integrate practical experience with the command and leadership skills that you have been taught here. It is now up to you to build on the knowledge gained, through your further self-development efforts, perseverance, tact and intuition in order to further reposition yourselves for the tasks ahead.”

According to him, the leadership skills training offered by the college would enable the participants contribute in tackling current challenges within the country.

He noted, “the Naval War College Nigeria is a critical enabler of operational effectiveness. This is more so at this critical time in our nation’s history, when the military is intensifying its efforts in providing aid to civil power and authority in the fight against diverse threats affecting the country.”

Successes of training

In a remark, the Special Guest of Honour and Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande said that the Nigerian Navy was recording successes in maritime security due to its huge investments in personnel training.

Rear Admiral Akinwande said, “you graduands have to realize that the Nigerian Navy has made significant investments into your training up to this stage of your careers. Your passage through this military leadership and command training course is to better prepare you for the challenges you will be confronted with in the course of your career.

“With such investments in you, the Nigerian Navy rightfully expects the very best from you in terms of your commitment to your duties, loyalty to the service and our great country. You must all endeavour to make positive contributions to the discharge of the Nigerian Navy’s statutory responsibilities as well as be good ambassadors of the College,” he stressed.

Rear Admiral Akinwande, while congratulating the graduates, lauded the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla for his transformational leadership and support, which has positively impacted the country’s image internationally.

“The concerted effort by Nigerian Navy has drastically reduced such incidents (piracy, sea robbery and kidnapping) in recent years resulting in the International Maritime Bureau delisting Nigeria from its list of piracy prone countries in March 2022,” he disclosed.

He commended the Naval War College for keeping pace with International best practices and implementation of a training curriculum designed to meet the demands of the dynamic security space.

Highpoint of the ceremony was the awards of certificates to the twenty successful participants of Command Level Course 7.
