Enugu Governor flags off construction of 300-bed  Hospital

Gov. Peter Mbah Mbah of Enugu State, on Tuesday flagged off the construction of a 300-bed Enugu International Hospital aimed at ending medical tourism in the country.

The hospital which is located at the Rangers Avenue, independence layout Enugu, will be equipped with the state-of-the-art technology in line with Mbah’s administration’s commitment to making Enugu a hub for medical tourism, business, investment and living.

Inaugurating the hospital, the governor said the project would be completed within 13 months, as he had zero tolerance for cost and time overrun.

He explained that the international hospital was carefully designed to mop up the market share in the medical tourism space as well as addressing the challenges in the tertiary healthcare sector.

The governor added that his administration was keen to intervene in the social services sector as well as providing basic infrastructure that was required for businesses to thrive in the state.

He disclosed that the 300-bed international hospital, when completed, would end extensive travels for medical tourism.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, extolled the governor for the ongoing revolution in the healthcare sector, saying that 260 type-2 and 9 type-3 primary healthcare hospitals were undergoing intervention at the primary health level.

“Twenty-two secondary healthcare facilities are receiving cutting-edge attention, with Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) and the University of Medical and Applied Sciences Teaching Hospital (SUMASTH) as tertiary hospitals.

“The international hospital will offer different medical services when completed which include, general medicine, emergency department, surgical services, obstetrics and gynaecology, intensive care unit and cardiology.

“Others are oncology, neurology, radiology and imaging, laboratory services, pharmacy, nutritional services, physical therapy and rehabilitation, biomedical engineering and medical gas production, health information services, among other medical services.”

The project contractor, Anthony Nader, said the hospital was also designed to accommodate everyone irrespective of class and position, and promised timely completion of the project.
