The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the ongoing dualisation of the Kuje township road, from Tipper Garage to the LEA Secretariat, is expected to be completed by December this year and will significantly enhance economic activities in the area.
Wike made this statement shortly after inspecting the project, which is being executed by Gilmor Engineering Nig. Ltd in Kuje on Thursday. He emphasised the importance of the road for Kuje residents, noting that the FCT Administration has extended the project from the LEA Secretariat to Gwagwalada.
In February 2024, the minister awarded the contract to Gilmor as part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to promote development in rural communities. Wike explained that, when completed, the road will facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services between Kuje and Gwagwalada, thereby boosting economic activities in the area.
“The dualisation of the road in Kuje center will be completed by December. “We have instructed the contractor to continue the dualization from Kuje to Gwagwalada to alleviate transportation difficulties for residents traveling there. This will not only reduce the distance but also positively impact the economies of the Kuje Area Council,” he stated.
Wike also mentioned that the construction of the six-lane dual carriageway from Airport Road to Kuje, executed by Arab Contractors, is progressing as scheduled. He commended the pace of the work and noted that the contractor has promised to complete all earthworks by the end of the year.
Regarding funding for completed and ongoing projects in the city center and the surrounding area councils, the minister explained, “It is a matter of strategy and prudent management of available resources.” He added that most funds come from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), stating, “No government can claim to have all the resources needed to provide services to its people. What is important is that we ensure everyone pays their taxes.”
Wike observed that Nigerians are more inclined to pay taxes when they see their contributions being used effectively. However, he acknowledged that many residents are reluctant to pay when they do not see tangible benefits resulting from their taxes.
The minister mentioned that the FCTA is doing its best to increase its IGR and called on Kuje residents to cooperate with the contractor to ensure the timely completion of the projects.
Among those accompanying the minister were Engr. Shehu Hadi Ahmed, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), along with several directors from the FCDA and the Coordinator of the Satellite Town Development Department.
