OpenAI Acquires Chat.com Domain
In a significant move within the tech industry, OpenAI has acquired the highly sought-after domain chat.com, to Strengthen ChatGPT’s Presence.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman subtly announced this acquisition through a brief tweet containing only the URL “chat.com”, marking a notable step in OpenAI’s branding and online strategy for its leading AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
The chat.com domain has a long-standing legacy and a substantial price tag. Initially registered in September 1996, it has been one of the web’s prominent domains.
Purchased by HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah in early 2023 for $15.5 million, one of the most expensive domain acquisitions recorded.
Shah originally acquired chat.com, believing that chat-based interfaces represent the future of software interactions. However, within months, he sold the domain to OpenAI for an undisclosed sum. Although the sale price is confidential, Shah confirmed it exceeded his initial investment of $15.5 million.
The transaction between Shah and OpenAI wasn’t solely a cash exchange; Shah revealed that he received part of the payment in OpenAI shares, effectively making him an investor.

Currently, chat.com redirects visitors to ChatGPT, joining other OpenAI domains like chatgpt.com and ai.com. Although OpenAI has not announced any rebranding plans, acquiring such a relevant domain name suggests future developments.
This acquisition reflects a broader AI trend of securing memorable web addresses. It follows OpenAI’s previous acquisition of ai.com, which also redirects to ChatGPT. The investment in chat.com highlights the increasing value of AI-related digital assets.
While chat.com currently serves as a redirect, industry analysts are considering its long-term potential. Some suggest that OpenAI may eventually rebrand ChatGPT to “Chat” or integrate the domain into a wider strategy to differentiate its GPT and newer model families.
However, given ChatGPT’s strong brand identity, OpenAI is likely to approach any changes with care.
As AI continues to reshape the online landscape, OpenAI’s latest acquisition demonstrates its commitment to securing premium digital real estate, reinforcing ChatGPT’s market position and laying the groundwork for future advancements in AI-driven conversational technology.
