AFRIFF 2024: Herbert Wigwe Honoured, ‘Headless’ Premieres
The 13th annual African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) kicked off in spectacular fashion on November 3 at the Royal Box by Cube 65 in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event brought together cinema icons, government officials, and international guests to celebrate the pride, strength, and global impact of African storytelling.

The inaugural AFRIFF Trailblazer Award, dedicated to the late Herbert Wigwe, was presented by Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa. The award was given to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and AFREXIM Bank President Benedict Oramah, in recognition of their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s creative economy.
ThisDay publisher and Arise TV Chairman, Nduka Obaigbena, praised AFRIFF founder Chioma Ude for her enduring vision during his address, describing AFRIFF as “one of the biggest film festivals in the world.” He also paid tribute to Herbert Wigwe, lauding him as a dedicated advocate for creative endeavors and a valued supporter of AFRIFF.
The event was brimming with excitement and pride as celebrated Nigerian actors, filmmakers, and directors such as Rita Dominic, Chioma Akpotha, Kunle Afolayan, Juliet Ibrahim, Kunle Remi, Osas Ighodaro, Clarence Peters, Omowunmi Dada, Uche Jombo, Segun Arinze, Baaj Adebule, Stan Nze, Jidekene Achufusi, Enyinna Nwigwe, and Bolanle Austen-Peters graced the red carpet. They also participated in a special portraiture session by renowned photographer Kelechi Amadi Obi inside the Mikano showroom, celebrating the achievements of African cinema.
