Democracy Must Be Upheld – President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu says democracy is a system of government that must be upheld by all because it allows the people to express their wishes and make decisions.

He spoke in Benin, Edo State, at the inauguration of a new administration led by Mr. Monday Okpebholo.

Addressing the mammoth crowd that filled the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, the venue for the epoch-making occasion, President Bola Tinubu noted that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria.

While appreciating the people of Edo State for voting candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Governor and Deputy Governor, President Tinubu said: “Today, we gather to celebrate democracy in its truest form. This atmosphere of joy and hope resonates with the voice of the people. This joyful cheer, this resounding call for a brighter tomorrow, is what democracy sounds like. This gathering is proudly sponsored by the will of the people, and no barrier is strong enough to stop the force of those who have chosen their leaders from amongst a multitude of options—especially those who have done so with conviction.

“We are here because you have spoken. Eloquently and decisively, you have pointed to the future you desire for this great state, and you have chosen the captains of this journey: men who stand as strong pillars of our great party, the All Progressives Congress. For this, on behalf of the nation and the esteemed members and allies of our party, I say: Thank you.”

He therefore asked the people of Edo State to bury their differences and unite in support of the new administration because the election is over.

“Every election carries its share of trials. Elections bring joy, but they also bring moments of division. This division is the first obstacle a leader must overcome in order to deliver the promises made to the people. The election is over, and any atmosphere that nourishes an “us versus them” mentality must be dismantled. Instantly and effectively. While some may seek to disrupt peace after the will of the people has been expressed, every elected leader has a duty that extends to all, including those who may have voted differently or those who ran against them. Animosity should never have a place in the course of governance.

“The election of Senator Monday Okpebholo and Rt. Honourable Dennis Idahosa as Governor and Deputy Governor is not the victory of one man but the achievement of an entire state—a powerful endorsement of your collective will. This is what democracy means: every vote holding equal weight, every voice contributing to a choice made with trust and vision. Over 25 years into our return to democracy, we have evolved, and today’s inauguration is yet another testimony that no individual vote holds more worth than another.

“It is often said that an honest leader is quick to see the legacy of problems they inherit. However, what truly defines such a leader is not the magnitude of these challenges, but the sincerity and courage to confront them. It is not fear that will shape the future of Edo State, but our commitment to the common good of the people, both supporters and opponents,” the President added.

Secured Future

The Nigerian leader said the reforms being implemented by his administration are pointers to a secured and prosperous future for the country. He enjoined Governor Okpebholo to key into that for the benefit of Edo people.

“When we took office, we knew that securing the future of our economy would demand serious reform—reform to stave off looming fiscal and monetary threats to the stability of this great nation. We have embarked on these reforms with determination, laying a foundation for new opportunities. Today, we seek leaders of integrity who will use this foundation to benefit the people. I am proud that Edo State has chosen such men to lead the charge forward.

“The journey before us transcends partisan lines. We need a united front in service to our people, and no political party has managed its own affairs with greater unity and purpose than the APC since we took charge. A house divided cannot stand, and the APC’s commitment to harmony and governance has shown that we are ready to lead. This is why we are here—because the people recognise in us a dedication not only to political victory but to the nation’s progress.

“Though it may seem daunting to take the reins of power at such a time, I assure you—this is the best moment to serve one’s people. For in these uncertain times, the people’s demand for true leadership is stronger than ever. In the worst of chaos, the toughest leaders are forged. In the roughest of storms, the finest sailors are made. The people of Edo State have placed their trust in Senator Monday Okpebholo and Rt. Honourable Dennis Idahosa, leaders who have demonstrated character and resolve, and who have earned this honour through their tireless dedication to the cause of Edo State,” said President Tinubu.

The president, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also said the APC is solidly standing its grounds across Nigeria and will continue to better the lot of Nigerians in appreciation of their support for the governing party.
