On Thursday, Alphabet’s Google launched a new smartphone app for its artificial intelligence chatbot, Gemini, on Apple’s App Store. The app introduces the latest generation of Google’s voice assistant to Apple’s mobile operating system.

Gemini includes Gemini Live, a voice-based feature that enables users to engage in natural conversations with the chatbot. Apple has already announced plans to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into a revamped version of its voice assistant, Siri.

Brian Marquardt, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management, explained, “It’s great for when you want to practice for an upcoming interview, ask for advice on things to do in a new city, or brainstorm and develop creative ideas.”

Gemini is Google’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is supported by Microsoft. Initially launched as Bard in February 2023, Gemini has evolved with added capabilities amid various controversies.

The voice feature was first introduced on Android devices but is now being expanded to iOS. Advances in AI, driven by large language models, have led to more capable voice assistants, surpassing older models like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and Google’s own Assistant.

Gemini Live replaces Google’s eight-year-old Assistant, which was built on older AI technology. Following a reorganisation in January, which saw the layoff of hundreds of employees from the Voice Assistant team, Google has streamlined its operations.

Last month, the company merged the Gemini app team into DeepMind, its AI research lab, as part of a push for greater efficiency.
