Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Vice Chancellor Calls for Unity Amid Challenges

The Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Prof. Bernard Odoh, has made an impassioned plea for collaboration across the university community to overcome the challenges currently affecting the institution since his appointment as the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor on October 29, 2024.

At a press conference in Awka, Anambra State, on Friday, Odoh, represented by his Personal Assistant for Media and Publicity, Mr. Charles Otu, addressed the media to call for a united front in fostering the university’s growth.

Otu emphasised that the issues surrounding Prof. Odoh’s appointment have been concluded, dismissing ongoing negative media narratives as baseless and self-serving.

“We urge those engaging in false narratives against Prof. Odoh to prioritize the university’s interests over personal gains,” Otu stated, alleging that many have resorted to tarnishing the Vice Chancellor’s reputation without substantial evidence of any irregularities in the selection process.

He clarified that Prof. Odoh’s selection followed a rigorous and transparent process carried out by the Governing Council. After an evaluation of 18 candidates, Odoh emerged victorious with an impressive score of 90 points, while the runner-up scored 68 points.

This outcome was substantiated by a consent judgment from the National Industrial Court in Awka, validating the Governing Council’s scoring framework.

According to Otu, the selection process was comprehensive and included responses from relevant professional bodies, including the Medical and Dental Council Association of Nigeria.

He gave assurances that the Governing Council acted fairly and transparently, refuting claims of misconduct related to the appointment.

“Prof. Odoh’s qualifications speak for themselves. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences and a Master of Science in Applied Geophysics, both from NAU, where he also completed his Doctorate in 2008. His academic journey includes previous lectureships and professorships at other institutions, showcasing his extensive experience and commitment to academia,” he stated.

Otu described the Vice Chancellor as a dedicated and principled leader, asserting that he is committed to realizing a broad and transformative vision for the university while maintaining high standards and integrity.

“His work ethic and dedication to the institution are undeniable,” Otu stated, urging the media and public to verify facts and refrain from spreading misinformation.

He added that as NAU steers this tumultuous period, Prof. Odoh remains focused on uplifting the institution, calling for collective effort and a shared vision among all stakeholders for a prosperous future.
