Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has firmly denied speculation about retiring from international football, amid rumors suggesting the Al-Kholood defender might step away after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

At 31, Troost-Ekong is the team’s oldest player, followed by Moses Simon (29) and Alex Iwobi (28). Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday ahead of Nigeria’s final AFCON qualifier against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Troost-Ekong reaffirmed his commitment to the national team.

“I often get asked this question by Nigerians, but I think it’s too early to consider retirement,” Troost-Ekong said. “I’m 31 now and believe I’m playing some of the best football of my career. AFCON 2025 is just 12 months away, and we’ll reassess things after that.”

He added that the decision would ultimately rest with the coaches and his ability to contribute to the team. “Once I feel I’m no longer an asset, I’ll have that discussion,” he explained.

Troost-Ekong also revealed he has clear targets in mind, including the upcoming AFCON and the 2026 World Cup, before making any decisions about his future.

With 75 international caps, the Super Eagles captain could add to his tally in today’s match against Rwanda.
