The National Industrial Court in Abuja Nigeria s capital has adjourned a suit filed by some police officers against the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police IG Kayode Egbetokun until December 18, 2024.

The officers claim the Inspector General of Police refused to decorate them with their new ranks despite being promoted and approved by the Police Service Commission.

One of the affected officers said the Police Service Commission promoted senior police officers on March 29, 2023, and forwarded the list to the Inspector General of Police.

However, the IGP only conveyed the promotion to some officers and decorated them, citing that he wasn’t the one who recommended them for promotion.

The Police Service Commission is empowered by law to recruit, appoint, promote, and discipline police officers.

The IGP can only recommend officers to the commission for promotion. The commission’s decision is in line with Section 6(1)(a) of the Police Service Commission Act and Section 16(3)(a) of the Police Act.

Counsel representing the claimants, Barrister Muka’ila Yahaya Mavo, argued that the court should order the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police to implement the commission’s decision.
Yahaya Mavo emphasised that this has been the tradition between the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission, as upheld by the Supreme Court in previous cases.
