Amir Khan Urges Joshua to Await Fury Mega-Fight
Former unified light welterweight champion Amir Khan has urged Anthony Joshua to delay any upcoming fights and focus on securing a highly anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury before retiring from boxing.
Khan believes the all-British clash with Fury would be the perfect way for Joshua, who has earned over $200 million in his career, to end his time in the ring.
“He should wait for the big fight against Tyson Fury,” Khan told the New Zealand Daily. “They’re both massive names, and it would be the ideal finale for him. AJ has had an incredible career, made a fortune, won titles, fought globally, and cemented his name. Why not finish on a high by taking on Fury and then retiring?”
Joshua is currently recovering from injuries sustained during his fifth-round knockout loss to IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois in September. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has stated that Joshua won’t return to action until at least May 2024.
Meanwhile, Fury is gearing up for a rematch against unified champion Oleksandr Usyk in December, after losing his WBC heavyweight title to the Ukrainian via split decision earlier this year.
Khan, who retired with an impressive career of his own, also highlighted that Joshua has avoided severe physical punishment during his fights, leaving his legacy intact.
“He can enjoy the rest of his life knowing he’s respected as a great champion. Plus, he hasn’t taken too much damage in the ring,” Khan added.
If Fury fails to reclaim his title from Usyk, the proposed Joshua-Fury fight could become a reality under the Riyadh Season banner, with a lucrative offer potentially on the table from His Excellency Turki Alalshikh.
