Sunday’s Africa Military Games (AMGA) men’s volleyball match between Algeria and Nigeria was a high-stakes affair as host nation, Nigeria, lost 3-1 against a formidable Algerian team.
Algeria, Burkina Faso and Kenya claimed their first victories in the men’s volleyball competition. The highly anticipated game between Nigeria, Algeria saw the North Africans triumph over Nigeria in three sets (26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22), at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Indoor Sports Hall in Abuja.
Nigeria enjoyed massive support from the home fans, but struggled to keep up with the Algerian side’s attack prowess. Head coach of the Nigeria Armed Forces Volleyball team, Solomon Zango, acknowledged the challenge but was optimistic about the team’s prospects going forward.
Kenya in the other game had an epic comeback to claim victory West Africans Ghana, winning 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-11) after trailing by two sets. Fans at the game were on the edge of their seats in the entertaining encounter that saw Kenya secure a dramatic win.
Burkina Faso dominated their game sweeping aside Sierra Leone in a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) in their encounter. The Burkinabe team’s precision and speed left little room for their opponents, making the match a one-sided affair from start to finish.
Burkina Faso faces Kenya at noon on Monday, while Algeria and Kenya trade tackles at 2 pm (WAT). Hosts Nigeria take on Sierra Leone at 4 pm also on Monday.
