Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State in North Central Nigeria, has announced his administration’s commitment to developing sports in the state by revitalising the Governor’s Cup Competition.
The tournament was declared open at the J.S. Tarka Stadium in Gboko by Governor Alia’s representative, Commissioner Terkimbi Ikyange, on Sunday, 25th November, 2024.
Governor Alia expressed optimism about the positive impact of sports development on the local economy and talent discovery, aiming to feed Lobi Stars Football Club and the national team with new talents. He highlighted the importance of investing in sports infrastructure to boost economic fortunes.
The Benue State Football Association (BSFA) Chairman, Paul Edeh, commended Governor Alia for his dedication to reviving the prestigious Governor’s Cup competition after nine years of inactivity.
He announced that both male and female categories of the competition would receive N10 million each as prize money, with measures in place to ensure fair officiating.
The tournament is set to pave the way for future premiere, championship and domestic league competitions in the state, with eight teams from each centre qualifying for the Benue league next year. Representatives from various councils and stakeholder groups pledged their support to make the tournament a resounding success.
In the opening match, Ohimini Local Government Council team triumphed over Gwer West 2-0, signalling the start of a vibrant sporting competition in Benue State. The event also featured equipment presentation to participating teams and a colourful march pass showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship among the players.
