Stakeholders have urged Nigerian youths to avoid substance misuse, emphasizing its importance in creating a healthier and drug-free future.
The advocates emphasised this during the 10th National youth Summit on Drug and substance abuse Prevention organised by the African Youth Initiative on Crime prevention AYICRIP in conjunction with the Bureau of Public Service Reforms in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Declaring the summit open, the Director General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Dr. Dasuki Arabi said that by prioritizing their well-being and making informed choices, they can not only enhance their own lives but also contribute to the overall health of their communities.
“To the Parents and Educators, it is important we realize that early intervention is critical. We need to pay attention to signs and symptoms of drug use and maintain open, honest communication with the youth under our care,” he said.
Representing the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Buba Marwa, the Former DG of the agency, Lanre Ipinmisho emphasised the importance of social media and technology in spreading awareness about drug abuse.
“Ignorance fuels substance abuse as such you need to arm yourselves with accurate information about the dangers of drug abuse and its far reaching consequences.
“The influence of peers on fellow peers cannot be underestimated as young people are known to listen to fellow peers therefore, you are expected to use your influence to create safe spaces where others can discuss their struggles without judgment,” he added.
Also speaking, the Convener and Executive Director of AYICRIP, Amb Chris Ibe urged Youths to continue to harnesses their potentials as it is the key to defeating drug menace.
“The essence of this conference is to escalate the issues of drug abuse and educate youths on how to resist the urge to do drugs,” he said.
He called on all relevant stakeholders to actively participate in raising awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
Mr. Ibe emphasized the importance of providing resources and support systems for those struggling with addiction, as well as promoting preventative measures that encourage healthy lifestyles.
