The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace says Journalists Play Vital Roles in promoting transparency, accountability and good Governance in any given society.
The DG who was represented by VON Bureau Chief, Enugu Zonal Office, Mr Chukwumerije Aja stated this during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) 8th Triennial National Delegate Conference themed; “Media and Democracy: The journalist’s role in holding leaders accountable,” held in Owerri, Imo State, Southeast Nigeria.
“I am honored to represent the Director General of Voice of Nigeria at this 8th triennial delegates conference
“As journalists, we play a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. Our responsibility is not only to report the news but also to hold those in power accountable for their actions. This is essential for the survival and sustenance of our democracy
“In a democratic society, the media serves as the watchdog of the government and the guardian of the people’s interests. We must continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism, seeking truth, accuracy, and fairness in our reporting
“However, we also recognize the challenges we face in carrying out our duties. The increasing threat of misinformation, the harassment and intimidation of journalists, and the erosion of press freedom are all issues that we must confront head-on
“As we gather here today, I urge us to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of journalism and to the values of democracy. Let us continue to work together to promote a free and independent press, and to hold our leaders accountable for their actions. In conclusion, I would like to quote the words of Nelson Mandela, who said, “A critical, independent, and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy.”
He urged all Nigerians to continue to nourish and protect this lifeblood, and to promote a vibrant and robust democracy in our great nation.
For his part, the outgoing NUJ National President, Comrade Isiguzo Chris thanked all members for their support in the last three years of his administration.
He urged members to continue to preach and practice unity in Democracy.
