The Government of Osun State and Organized Labour have signed an agreement on the implementation of a new minimum wage of N75,554.28 for workers in the state.
The agreement was signed on Friday by representatives of the State Government and Organized Labour at the Exco Chamber of the Governor’s office in Osogbo, the State capital.
Speaking after the signing, Osun State Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, who represented Governor Adeleke, said the event was the high point of an exhaustive process.
He explained that the Governor was determined and purposeful about giving the state workers a wage structure that would be higher than the national average of N70,000.
“Today’s event is a positive culmination of a long and exhaustive process. We’re happy that after careful consideration of the availability of revenue, possible revenue forecast, existing debt burdens, sustainability and continued growth and development of Osun State among others, we were able to arrive at a figure that was acceptable to both sides,” he said.
Adewusi then urged the workers to reciprocate the gesture of the government by rededicating themselves to work and improving on their service delivery.
The Head of Service of the State, Ayanleye Aina, noted that the improved wage package is geared towards ensuring a productive public service that will bring about efficient and effective service delivery across the State.
He disclosed that Governor Adeleke also approved a total sum of N25,000 to be paid monthly across the board to all pensioners in the state to help them cope with the times.
Ayanleye said: “The effective date of commencement of the new minimum wage is 1st December 2024 while one-month arrears shall be paid. It is to be noted that other salary structures within the public service system would be attended to as appropriate.”
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, lauded Governor Adeleke for listening to the demands of the labour unions and for living up to his campaign promise of prioritizing workers’ welfare.
“I want to commend Governor Adeleke for his responsive engagement with us, the representatives of the labour unions. For the record, we had very fruitful and seamless negotiating rounds with him and I’m happy today that we have sealed the deal.”
