The African Military Games have witnessed a powerful demonstration of how sports can bridge boundaries, foster friendship, and strengthen bonds among the Armed Forces of Africa.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa stated this at the closing ceremony of the just concluded 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja Nigeria’s Capital.

The CDS applauded the courage, skill, and sportsmanship exhibited by the participants on the fields, tracks, and courts which he said have been nothing short of inspiring.“While the medals and trophies represent the pinnacle of achievement, I must emphasize that in these games, irrespective of ranking or position, every team is a winner. We are proving that victory is not just about crossing the finish line first, but about embodying the values of unity and resilience”

“Over the past several days, the National Stadium in Abuja has been a hub of camaraderie, excellence, and sportsmanship under the theme Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa Through Sports”

General Musa said this year’s edition, has been a testament to the increasing solidarity and collaboration among African military forces.

“The athletes have showcased not just their physical prowess, but also their dedication, discipline, and determination, qualities that define the military ethos importantly. I am delighted to note that no casualties were recorded during this event, a testament to the fitness, preparedness, and professionalism of our athletes”

According to the Nigerian Defence Chief, these Games go beyond mere competition but reminders of the collective strength of Africa when it comes together.

“In a world facing diverse security challenges, it is crucial that we, as military forces, continue to find innovative ways to foster cooperation and mutual understanding. This event is a shining example of how sports can serve as a bridge for peace and collaboration”

The President of the Organisation of Africa Military Sports, OSMA, Major General Abdullahi Maikano in his address said the African Military Games have not only been a platform for competition but also a celebration of shared values of unity with athletes transcending over diverse borders and differences.

He said each event was not just a contest of strength and skills, but a testimony of the hard work, discipline, unwavering spirits and cooperation.

“It is my pride and gratitude that I address the African Armed Forces sportsmen and women, the wonderful achievement milestone of our cooperation and unity in African Armed Forces. We have witnessed extraordinary displays of skills, determination and sportsmanship showcasing the very base of the continent of Africa”
 
“As we close this chapter, let us carry forward the cooperation, understanding, friendship, and bond we have formed during this game. The camaraderie and discipline that has flourished during these games is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we stand togethe”.

The final day of the games also featured hurdles races and inter service combat racing, performances from poets and artists amongst other entertaining displays.

The curtains were officially drawn on the two weeks competition that featured 19 sports, 1354 athletes from 24 African nations in Abuja Nigeria’s Capital.

Team Nigeria Armed Forces topped the medals table with a total of 234 medals made up of 114 gold, 65 silver and 45 bronze across 21 sports, Algeria host of the next edition of the games came second with 96 medals, consisting of 53 gold, 22 sliver and 21 bronze.

Kenya came in third place on the medals table with 59 medals: 21 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze while Ghana, Ethiopia, and Tunisia made the top six.
