The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, has called for collaborative efforts by governments and well-meaning individuals to map out measures to improve the living standards of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in line with international best practices, as the global community marks this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
In a statement released by Mr Emma Madu, the SSA/Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Udeze commended the 6th Anambra State House of Assembly for enacting a law for the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in the State in 2018, leading to the establishment of the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission in 2021.
The Speaker called on the National Assembly and State legislatures to follow Anambra State’s lead by crafting policies and legislation aimed at providing a better life for persons with disabilities.
He also praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for equipping the Disability Rights Commission with cutting-edge digital tools to enhance advocacy and support for persons with disabilities.
Speaker Udeze encouraged persons with disabilities to rise above discrimination and stigmatization, urging them to strive to improve their living conditions. He also called on the public and private organizations to integrate persons with disabilities into their schemes and provide an enabling environment for them to showcase their talents and coexist harmoniously with their able-bodied counterparts.
