The Annie Okonkwo Foundation has awarded scholarships to 150 secondary school students in Anambra State through its impactful “Dreams to Degree” initiative.

This program supports beneficiaries from Senior Secondary Three by covering their West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees and providing essential learning materials.

During the scholarship certificate presentation at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, Mr. Uchenna Okonkwo—the benefactor of the foundation and a member of the House of Representatives representing Idemili North and South—highlighted that the initiative honours the legacy of his late father, Senator Annie Okonkwo. He also announced plans to extend support to students who gain admission into tertiary institutions by funding their tuition fees.

Beneficiaries, such as Amauche Nwaofufe and Chiemelie Anuchiem, expressed their gratitude for the scholarships and pledged to excel in their upcoming WAEC exams.

Addressing the gathered students, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, represented by Dr. Bayo Omogunwa, urged them to maximize this opportunity by concentrating on their studies to fulfill their dreams. Additionally, Professor Chidozie Nwafor delivered an insightful lecture titled “Choosing the Right Course: Preparing for Academic Experience in Tertiary Institutions,” emphasizing the importance of aligning career aspirations with personal interests for academic success.

The event received accolades from government officials, including the State Chief of Protocol and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Chinedu Nwoye, who praised the foundation for its alignment with the governor’s Public-Private Community Partnership model to enhance education in the state.
