Rivers Killings: Governor Fubara Pledges to Implement Inquiry Recommendations

The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to implement the recommendations of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the recent destruction of lives and property across some local government areas.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara had set up a seven-member judicial commission of inquiry into the arson, killings, and the wanton destruction of property on Monday, October 7, 2024.

He noted that Governor Fubara gave the assurance when the commission chairman, Justice Ibiwengi Roseline Minakiri, submitted four volumes of reports of their investigation and recommendations to him at the Government House in Port Harcourt city.

According to the spokesperson, the governor declared that his administration will neither tolerate nor allow such a level of violence in the state henceforth.

“We are not going to be part of any system that would encourage destruction in this state. For that reason, we had to inaugurate this commission so that the commission would look into the remote and immediate causes of the problem.

“I believe that with the recommendations of this commission, the help of God and the support of everyone, we will make sure that we implement the recommendations.

“As a government, we will act promptly and decisively on the recommendations, release a white paper and ensure that those responsible for the heinous acts face the full weight of the law,” the governor stated.

In her presentation, the Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, Justice Minakiri, said they had put their findings into four volumes, including the recommendations.

“We have here four volumes of the report. We have the memoranda, which is the memoranda we got after we made our publications. The Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nelson Chukwudi,” Justice Minakiri explained.

She advised that the recommendations should be carefully examined and implemented to deter people from such callous acts and the sought-after peace for the state.
