Groups train Journalists on ethics, Professionalism in Kano

Brown Pegion Resources in collaboration with Citizens for Development and Education (CDE), have organized a one-day training for Journalists in Kano state, North West Nigeria.

The training with the theme: ‘Promoting ethics and professionalism in journalism through knowledge-based reportage’ was designed to strengthen journalists’ capacity to carry out their work professionally.

The executive director of CDE, Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya, urged journalists to be creative, innovative, inquisitive, and seek knowledge to build themselves according to global standards.

He said journalists have greater responsibility in society which comes with a lot of challenges, encouraging the participants to adhere to the principles of the profession.

According to him, the world has turned into a global village hence the need for journalists to explore research, investigation, and expand their horizons through networking, knowledge, and skills.

He highlighted that by adding value to their work, the media can exhibit professionalism in their reportage by capturing and disseminating it to the public.

“We want the media in Kano to build their careers on the international stage.”

Dr. Bala A. Muhammad of the Department of Mass Communication at Bayero University Kano presented a paper titled, ‘Promoting Ethics and Professionalism in Journalism Through Knowledge-based Reportage.

He identified knowing the laws and ethics of the media as critical in the practice of the profession.

“These are essential in the successful practice of knowledge-based media work we, as journalists, must always strive for more knowledge which will lead to excellence.”

Bala posited that to eradicate ignorance based on reporting, a journalist should be fair, objective, bold, independent, and know media law and ethics.

Also, Dr. Nuhu Idris of the Faculty of Law at Bayero University Kano spoke on Nigerian governance structure, functions, and limitations, to enhance the use of proper terminology for effective reportage.

There were interactive sessions as well as questions and answers during the training.
