Bayern Munich has officially retired the iconic number five jersey to honor the late Franz Beckenbauer, widely known as “Der Kaiser.” The announcement was made via Fabrizio Romano’s X handle on Sunday, confirming no player will wear the number five jersey again.

Franz Beckenbauer: A Football Legend

Beckenbauer, who passed away on January 7, 2024, is celebrated as one of football’s all-time greats. He is among the select few to have won the FIFA World Cup, European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d’Or. Notably, he led Germany to victory in the 1972 European Championships and the 1974 World Cup.

Dominance at Bayern Munich

During his career at Bayern Munich, Beckenbauer secured:

• Three consecutive Bundesliga titles
• Three successive European Cups
• His leadership and commanding presence earned him the nickname “Der Kaiser,” meaning “The Emperor.”

A Legacy Beyond Playing

Beyond his playing days, Beckenbauer had successful stints managing Bayern, winning the Bundesliga in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996. He also served as the club’s president.
