By: Chioma Eche, Abuja.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has promised that inputs generated from stakeholders would be reviewed to guarantee transparency before granting approval to Aba Power Limited Electricity, APLE for an upward review of its electricity tariff.
The hearing, which took place at NERC’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital drew stakeholders, business owners among others.
The review of inputs is a follow up to a public hearing held recently, on the application submitted by the Aba Power Limited, for an upward review of its electricity tariff.
The hearing, which is part of NERC’s statutory obligation to ensure transparency and stakeholder engagement, provided an avenue for consumers to present their opinions on the proposed tariff adjustments.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, on its twitter handle stated that the NERC’s Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to balancing the interests of consumers and service providers.
“This hearing is part of our effort to ensure that any tariff review is fair and reflects the realities on the ground. We will carefully review the submissions made here today before making a final decision,” he said.
He further assured stakeholders that the Commission’s input will continue to play vital role in determining the outcome of the tariff review application in the country.
However, representative of the Aba Power Limited Electricity, led by the Managing Director, Ugochukwu Opiegbo, explained the reasons behind the application, emphasizing the need for increased revenue to sustain and enhance power infrastructure and service delivery.
He also highlighted ongoing projects aimed at upgrading the electricity distribution network in Aba, including sustaining effort at metering all its customers.
APLE is a pioneer private sector licensee of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC) for electricity distribution in Nigeria. APLE is a special purpose vehicle of the Aba Integrated Power Project for distribution of electricity to consumers within its ring-fenced Aba metropolis.
