The Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has emphasised the transformative role of youth and technology in shaping Africa’s future.

Speaking at the 2024 Abuja Tech Converge (ATC), Comrade Olawande highlighted the critical contribution of young people to Africa’s technological advancement.

Represented by the Director General of the Committee of Youth Mobilisation and Sensitisation, Mr Obinna Nwaka, the Minister praised ThriveAgric for its innovative contributions to improving agricultural productivity and empowering communities across the continent.

“This year’s theme is particularly relevant,” Olawande remarked. “Africa stands on the brink of a technological revolution, presenting both tremendous opportunities and formidable challenges.”

He underscored the importance of leveraging innovation to address pressing issues such as climate change, resource management, and education, noting that technology offers powerful solutions to these challenges.

The Minister highlighted the success of the Tech-Talent Accelerated Program (TAP), a flagship initiative equipping young Africans with digital skills for the global economy. In 2023, half of TAP participants were women, and nearly all secured employment or entrepreneurial opportunities. The current TAP cohort, Olawande revealed, is already working on pioneering projects tackling some of Africa’s most urgent needs.

He called for empowering youth in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and green technologies, emphasising their potential for sustainable development in areas like precision agriculture, renewable energy, and waste management.

In closing, Olawande reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that equip young people with the tools, knowledge, and mentorship needed to thrive. He expressed optimism that the discussions and collaborations at the 2024 Abuja Tech Converge would drive Africa toward a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The event, attended by key players in the tech and innovation sectors, marked a significant milestone in Africa’s journey to harness technology for economic growth and sustainable development.
