The 19th annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is currently taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 15 to 19 December 2024.

Hosted by the United Nations and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the forum serves as a pivotal global platform for open dialogue on pressing issues surrounding internet governance.

This year’s theme, “Building Our Multistakeholder Digital Future,” underscores the collaborative effort needed to create an inclusive and equitable digital landscape. The forum has drawn over 9,000 participants from more than 170 countries, including representatives from governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical community, and international organisations.

Throughout the week, participants have been actively engaging in sessions covering various digital governance topics. Discussions have focused on exchanging information, sharing policies, and fostering practices that ensure the Internet’s sustainability, security, and development.

A notable contribution came from Malam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

During a session titled “Building Ethical AI: Policy Tool for Human-Centric and Responsible AI Governance,” Inuwa emphasised the critical role of ethical AI development. He highlighted the contributions of the Digital Cooperation Organisation (DCO), particularly its Responsible AI Tool, which ensures AI technologies are developed and utilised to benefit society.

NITDA’s participation reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to global digital development and aligns with its national priorities of driving diversification through industrialisation, digitisation, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation.

The forum will conclude with the release of the Riyadh IGF Messages, which will provide actionable policy recommendations on digital governance. As a vital gathering of stakeholders, the IGF continues to play an essential role in addressing challenges and seizing opportunities in the digital space, fostering cooperation to shape a more inclusive digital future for all.
