Nigerian Drones to Boost South Africa Mining

Nigerian drone company Terrahaptix is set to begin exporting drones to South Africa for mining activities.

According to the founder Nathan Nwachukwu, the company has signed an exclusive contract with DiggingDeep a leading company which connects African mining operations with suppliers, to distribute its drones to South African mining companies.

He said, “The mining industry is where we have the most customers.”

Terrahaptix drones will be used for surveying and mapping mining sites, inspecting equipment, and monitoring hazardous areas, reducing the need for workers in dangerous zones.

They will also help identify mineral deposits and monitor environmental impacts like air and water quality.

With 65% of mines globally using drones, up from 44% in 2018, the market for mining drones is projected to grow from $31.4 billion to $103 billion by 2031.

South Africa is the fifth African country Terrahaptix will be exporting to, joining Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, and Nigeria.

Most of Terrahaptix’s sales come from outside Nigeria, with the company projecting to dominate the African drone market in the next five years.

Nwachukwu stated, “This is going to help us solidify our position as a drone leader on the continent.”

The company has already surpassed its $1.6 million revenue target and is on track to make over $2 million in its first year.

Demand for Terrahaptix drones is expected to increase towards the end of 2024, driven by a “mining renaissance in Africa” and the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), which use lithium batteries.

With 80% of drone materials sourced locally and competitive pricing, Terrahaptix could soon extend its market reach beyond Africa.
