The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, in collaboration with the Anambra and Delta State Police Commands, in a significant move to ensure smooth traffic flow at the Onitsha Head Bridge during the upcoming festive period, has announced the removal of all checkpoints at the bridge from December 18, 2024, to January 10, 2025.

This decision was disclosed in a statement signed by RC Margaret B. Onabe, Sector Public Education Officer of the FRSC Anambra State Command.
It follows a request from the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, who sought assistance from Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, to eliminate checkpoints at the Onitsha end of the bridge while ensuring a police presence on the Second Niger Bridge axis.

In light of this collaboration, the Anambra CP engaged with his Delta State counterpart, CP B.S. Oluwafemi, to conduct an on-site assessment of both the Onitsha Head Bridge and the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge.

“Consequently, several measures have been put in place to facilitate smoother traffic movement during the festive season:
– The removal of all checkpoints at the Head Bridge from December 18 to January 10.
– Establishment of mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis.
– Dismantling of all police checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge to ensure unrestricted traffic flow.
– Deployment of officers for joint traffic control efforts with the FRSC throughout the festive period.”

Onabe added that the FRSC Anambra State Command is dedicated to maintaining the safety of all road users during this busy time of year.

Motorists are encouraged to cooperate fully with traffic management personnel and adhere to all traffic regulations to enhance safety on the roads.
