Former Boxing World Champion Thierry Jacob Dies at 59
Thierry Jacob, the French former boxing world champion, has passed away at the age of 59, the mayor of Calais announced on Friday.
Thierry Jacob’s Career and Achievements
Jacob secured the WBC super bantamweight title in 1992 by defeating Mexico’s Daniel Zaragoza. The memorable victory took place in front of his hometown fans in Calais, solidifying his reputation in the boxing world.
Mayor Natacha Bouchart shared the sad news on Facebook:
“We begin this day with sad news. Thierry Jacob died overnight, so young.”
Jacob turned professional in 1984 and retired a decade later with a record of 39 wins and 6 losses. He lost his WBC title during his first defense against American boxer Tracy Harris Patterson in New York.
A Family Legacy in Boxing
Boxing ran in the Jacob family. His son, Romain Jacob, followed in his footsteps and became the European super featherweight champion in 2014.
