The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara State Sector Command, has announced the deployment of 950 personnel, including 350 Special Marshals and 120 first responders, to ensure road safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The deployment also includes 16 patrol vehicles, two power bikes, four ambulances, four private tow trucks, and a 70-tonne tow truck, all aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and quick emergency responses across the state.
In a statement issued by the Public Education Officer of the RS8.1 Kwara State Sector Command, Basambo Olayinka Busari, it was revealed that the initiative is part of the “Operation Zero Tolerance for Road Traffic Crashes,” scheduled to run from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Mufutau A. Irekeola, has strategically positioned personnel at key locations within Ilorin and other major cities across the state to manage traffic and reduce road accidents during the festive season.
The sector commander admonished the motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations throughout the yuletide.
He further enjoined drivers to avoid dangerous driving & wrongful overtaking, excessive speeding, overloading, obstruction, use of phone while driving, operation of mechanically deficient and rickety vehicles/route violation, and driving with worn-out tyres among others.
The statement added that to ensure the free flow of traffic and safe motoring before, during, and after the festivities, the Command is fully engaged in the Public Enlightenment campaign/Mega Rally in all interstate motor parks, early morning cry, market, church, and mosque advocacies, respectively, to sensitize the motoring public in the state.
It added that the command is also carrying out special patrol operations/traffic control to ease the free flow of traffic along the major roads.
According to the statement, 70 tons of heavy tow trucks and ambulances for rescue and clearing of obstructions from the highway bill marshals have been stationed along the major highways within the state.
While wishing the good people of the state of Harmony a happy Christmas & New Year celebration, the FRSC Boss advised motorists to drive with caution as ”ONLY THE LIVING CELEBRATES.”
