Apple to Launch Face ID Smart Doorbell Camera

Apple is developing a smart doorbell camera featuring Face ID technology, with a potential release set for late 2025.

The device will operate similarly to the Face ID feature on iPhones, unlocking doors for authorised individuals automatically. It is expected to include Apple’s Secure Enclave chip for secure management of facial recognition data and will likely be compatible with HomeKit-enabled smart locks. To ensure seamless integration, Apple may collaborate with smart lock manufacturers.

The doorbell camera is anticipated to use Apple’s upcoming “Proxima” wireless chip to enhance connectivity across its smart home ecosystem. This development forms part of Apple’s broader expansion into the smart home market, positioning the company to compete with industry leaders such as Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest.

In addition to the smart doorbell camera, Apple is reportedly working on other smart home devices, including:

Smart home cameras for general security purposes.

Smart displays, one resembling a magnetically mounted iPad and another with a robotic arm for added functionality.

A smart hub featuring a 6-inch screen, FaceTime capabilities, and AI-powered controls, acting as the command centre for Apple’s smart home products.

Updated HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices, are both expected to feature the Proxima wireless chip.

Mark Gurman suggests that Apple might license the doorbell camera technology to brands such as Logitech or Belkin. While the Face ID-enabled doorbell is unlikely to be available before late 2025, HomePod Mini and Apple TV updates could arrive as early as next year.
