In a historic event for the Anambra State judiciary, the law Revision committee has submitted its long-awaited report to the state government following over two years of dedicated work.
The report was presented through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, who emphasized that the state’s laws had not seen a comprehensive review since 1991, over three decades ago.
According to the Commissioner, “The initiative to establish the Law Revision Committee was launched by former Governor Willie Obiano, who initially tasked the group with completing the review within a six-month timeframe. The primary aim was to enhance public access to justice by ensuring the relevance and clarity of state laws.”
During the reception of the report at her office in Awka, Commissioner Ifemeje hailed the submission as a landmark achievement in Anambra’s justice sector.
She noted that the review aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to expediting the delivery of justice, as many of the existing laws had become obsolete and needed realignment to reflect contemporary trends and realities.
Professor Ifemeje announced plans to forward the report to the governor for subsequent presentation to the Anambra State House of Assembly for “blanket approval.”
She reiterated ongoing efforts to digitize Anambra’s legal statutes, making them readily accessible online.
In remarks made earlier, Justice Ijem Onwuamaegwu, Chairman of the Anambra State Law Revision Committee, conveyed through committee member and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ifeanyi Obiakor, that the extensive scope of the review required more time than originally anticipated.
“With the successful evaluation of approximately 300 laws, Anambra State is poised to adopt an updated legal framework once the Assembly grants its approval.
“This comprehensive review promises to modernize the state’s legal system, fostering a more accessible and equitable judiciary for all citizens.”
