Chinese Foreign Minister Praises Nigeria’s Role in Africa’s Peace, Development

Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi has commended Nigeria for its role in Africa’s peace and development, highlighting the country as a key African nation with global influence and an important member of the Global South.

Yi disclosed this during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He also stressed the importance of Nigeria in Africa and Nigeria-China relations, expressing China’s commitment to furthering solidarity and cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in pursuing development and vitalisation.

Yi said; “Nigeria plays an irreplaceable and important role for Africa’s peace and development.”

According to the Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister, the visit is expected to deepen diplomatic ties, promote mutual understanding, explore new avenues for collaboration and to discuss the implementation of the FOCAC Beijing meeting’s common understandings, particularly the 10 partnership actions.

Yi said; “The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between China and Nigeria, fostering cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, and infrastructure development.”

He said that his visit would follow up with the outcomes from the meeting, providing new substance to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

“I am sure that our meeting today will produce new common understandings and that you and your colleagues will continue to work for the growth of our relations,” he added.

Responding, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, noted that Nigeria and China have a rich history of mutual respect and cooperation, which has yielded fruitful results in various fields.

Ambassador Tuggar said; “Our cooperation has yielded fruitful results in various fields, including trade, investment, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange, among others.​ As we explore new avenues for collaboration, I wish to acknowledge China’s remarkable progress in economic development, technological innovation, and global leadership. Nigeria, too, is undergoing significant transformations, driven by our vision to become a more prosperous, peaceful, and democratic nation.”

Ambassador Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the One China Principle and assured China of Nigeria’s continued support at the international stage.

We are certain of Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the One-China-Principle and assure of our continued support for China at the International stage. Also Nigeria’s diplomatic relationship and continuous collaboration with China had been free from disputes, which had brought substantial benefits to both countries. In addition, Nigeria has recognized the high-level visits between the officials of the two countries that have helped in shaping and strengthening the existing relations between both countries,” he added

The meeting is part of the Chinese Foreign Minister’s first overseas visit of the new year, with the aim to discuss the implementation of the FOCAC Beijing meeting’s common understandings, particularly the 10 partnership actions.
