The Youth Wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU Youth) recently held an awards ceremony in Awka, recognizing 179 exemplary individuals for their significant contributions to community development.

The event celebrated the recipients of the Community Youth Development Awards (CYDA), honoring both local role models and other youth icons across the state.

The initiative aimed to acknowledge the efforts of 179 role models representing each of Anambra’s communities, alongside 21 Star Role Models from the local government areas.

The awards were presented to those who have distinguished themselves through their lifestyles and contributions to youth development initiatives.

During the ceremony, Comrade Ken Okoli, President General of ASATU Youth, emphasized the importance of recognizing those who volunteer their time and resources for community betterment.

He stated, “This recognition is aligned with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Public-Private Community Partnership (PPCP) governance model, which engages communities as active stakeholders in development.”

Okoli elaborated on the objective of the awards, expressing the organization’s commitment to celebrating individuals making positive impacts within their communities. “Our rigorous nomination process ensured that no community was overlooked.

Each year, we aim to honor one individual from every community as a way to appreciate their contributions and inspire the youth.”

He added, “The awardees symbolize the values we want to instill in the younger generation.

They represent individuals who have, without expectation of reward, worked tirelessly for the common good.” As part of their recognition, awardees will become ASATU Youth Patrons and Patronesses, serving as role models for future leaders.

The selection process was based solely on merit, with nominations coming from the communities themselves and a screening committee responsible for selecting the Star Role Models.” Okoli mentioned that the event would become an annual highlight in its commitment to developing community leaders.

Looking ahead, ASATU Youth has ambitious plans for 2025, which include implementing a comprehensive blueprint of programs, activating branches in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and establishing a portal for Anambra youth registration.

The projected budget for these initiatives stands at ₦500 million.” Okoli called for support from individuals and organizations to help realize these goals.

He also reiterated the organization’s commitment to addressing security challenges in the state, pledging full support for government-led initiatives to restore safety and peace in Anambra.

Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, chair of the occasion from the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth wing, praised ASATU for the historic event, which he noted would help restore the importance of role models in society. “It’s vital that we move away from recognizing individuals merely for financial gain,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, ASATU President Barr. Titus Akpudo underscored the importance of collective responsibility in community building, applauding the governor’s efforts to advance the state.

Among the award recipients, Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu of Princeton Hospital expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that it would motivate him and others to further contribute to community improvement. He encouraged Nigerian youth to pursue entrepreneurship and avoid crime.

Honorable David from Awka North, another award recipient, expressed appreciation for the recognition and pledged to enhance his contributions to community development. Chief JohnBosco Onunkwo, a prominent figure in the All Progressive Congress (APC), also received an award, expressing his commitment to humanitarian efforts and youth empowerment.

In total, many notable figures were honored, including Nnamdi Okonkwo, Bar Emmanuel Chibuzor, and Sir Amobi Ogum, recognizing their dedication to community service.
