Tanker Explosion: President Tinubu Directs NOA to Initiate Nationwide Campaign

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA), to initiate a nationwide educational campaign to raise public awareness on the severe risks and environmental dangers of scooping fuel from fallen petrol tankers.

This directive was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on the incident of tanker explosion,which killed over 80 people in Niger State.

The President underscored the tragic and preventable nature of the incident, as many victims were those scooping Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the overturned tanker.

Mourning the victims, President Tinubu who expressed deep sorrow over the fuel tanker explosion extended his condolences to the families affected, as well as to the government and people of Niger State.

The President further directed the provision of comprehensive medical care to the injured and instructed security and road safety authorities to implement measures to avert similar incidents.

President Tinubu urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid approaching accident sites, especially those involving fuel-laden vehicles, due to their highly explosive nature.

The devastating explosion occurred on Saturday at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, bringing about an immense human toll leaving many burnt to death beyond recognition.

The Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)-ladened tanker was said to have exploded when some residents of the area went to scoop its content after an accident.

Scores were said to have been burnt to death, while several others sustained various degrees of burn.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), has now put the number of deaths from the incident at 86.
