The Kano State Government has unveiled plans to invest in transforming Radio Kano into a centre for training journalists and enhancing its operations.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya revealed this during a familiarisation visit to the station, describing Radio Kano as one of the oldest radio stations in the country, with significant potentials for Journalists.
He stated that, the government is committed to initiating capacity-building Programmes for both public and private media organisations, recognising their critical roles in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities for youth in the state.
He urged the management of Radio Kano to prioritise staff welfare, particularly for junior workers.
Wauya suggested establishing a cooperative society for staff members and pledged his support to ensure its success.
The information Commissioner emphasised the importance of forming partnerships with international media organisations to enhance the quality of Radio Kano’s programming, attract advertisements, and boost revenue generation.
The Managing Director of Radio Kano expressed gratitude for the visit and assured him of harmonious working relations with the staff.
He also highlighted some of the station’s recent achievements, including the payment of six months’ allowances to casual staff, the establishment of a medical center, and the upgrade of the station’s frequency to 13 kilohertz.
However, the Managing Director pointed out certain challenges, such as unstable power supply, which hinder full operations.
He appealed to the Commissioner to intervene in restoring the station’s retainership with the 44 local government areas in the state to improve revenue.
