FG to Commence Operation Empty The Stores To Support Farmers
By Ene Okwanihe, Abuja
The Nigerian Government says it will soon commence what it tagged “operation Empty the Stores” aimed at ensuring farmers have access to needed inputs across the country.
The exercise seeks to ensure that inputs that were acquired for farmers that have been stored away in government storage facilities across the country will be cleared from the stores and given to farmers.
Inputs such as farm equipment and inputs that are available in storage will be deployed to farmers before the commencement of the 2025 rainy season.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi disclosed this at a workshop for agriculture journalist organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital with the theme “building partnership with the media for food security”.
He said inputs acquired for farmers shouldn’t be laying around in stores instead it should serve its purpose in the hands of the farmers.
“It may interest you that the ministry will soon be distributing agricultural inputs and implements. Arrangements are on and within the next couple of months these will be done. And of course, immediately I resume duties. I made a pronouncement that we will be embarking on Operation Empty the Store.
“It means that all the equipment and other things that we have in these stores are not meant for the store, they are meant for the farmers. And therefore, as we embark on emptying all our stores nationwide, such as the equipment and the input will be useful to our farmers”. He explained
He stated that exercise would support and encourage farmers to produce more food for the country.
