The government says the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus, NG-CARES, programme has improved the lives and livelihoods of over 15m poor and vulnerable Nigerians between 2021 and 2025.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Emeka Obi stated this during the NG-CARES 2.0 Consultative and Technical meeting with States and the World bank in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Dr. Obi stated that the programme aims to deliver targeted interventions in social protection, basic services, food security, and livelihood support for Nigerians.

He said; “So the NG-CARES programme is a very forward and strategic initiative of the Nigerian government that is designed to mitigate endemic shocks that impoverish the poor and vulnerable citizens of our dear nation. This programme is therefore a very impactful response to our administration’s determination and commitment to cushion the impacts of various shocks on individuals and households. It will also guarantee food security and support the revival of ailing nano, micro, small and medium scale businesses operated by the most vulnerable segments of our population.”
The Permanent Secretary stated that the Nigerian Government, with approval from the World Bank, has extended the program’s duration to May 31, 2025, providing sufficient time for stakeholders to finalize the design of NG-CARES 2.0.
“This consultative meeting we are organizing in the next two days provides a unique opportunity to review the agreements reached so far. It also allows us to refine these agreements and, where necessary, recommend strategies to achieve the program’s laudable objectives,” Dr. Obi said.
He commended the results achieved under the NG-CARES Programme, highlighting its positive impact on community resilience and economic stability.
While speaking, the World bank Task team leader, Dr Lire Ersado emphasized the importance of collaboration between various agencies in the delivery and implementation of NG-CARES 2.0.
Dr Ersado also highlighted the activities of the two days event, stressing the necessity of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to assess the programme’s impact and make data-driven adjustments for continuous improvement.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Federal CARES Technical Committee, Mrs. Elizabeth Egharevba stated that the programme has achieved results at the sub-national level and there is more to accomplish with NG-CARES 2.0.
The National Coordinator of NG-CARES, Dr AbdulKarim Obaje while speaking, noted that the programme would enhance coordination and streamline efforts among stakeholders, ensuring that resources are used efficiently.
