STEM Education: Abia State Launches Science Teachers’ Championship
The Abia State Government, in collaboration with ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited, has launched the Science Teachers’ Championship (STC) competition as part of its initiative to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across the state.
Speaking at the launch event in Umuahia on Thursday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Goodluck Ubochi, highlighted the critical role of STEM in advancing education.
Represented by Mrs Hope Nwosu, the Director of Science, Technology, and Vocational Education, Ubochi reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering and motivating science teachers to drive STEM education effectively in schools.
“This is a statewide competition, and all schools public and private should participate,” he stated.
“The current administration is prioritising science subjects. We have assessed the need for science teachers across various subjects, and soon, our public schools will have an adequate number of qualified science teachers.”
He encouraged teachers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, emphasising that the administration rewards hard work and commitment.
In his remarks, Mr. Patrick Ochuba, Chief Executive Officer of ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited, explained that the competition was designed to incentivise science teachers and students.

“The STC platform digitally connects science teachers and students in public and private secondary schools throughout the state,” Ochuba said.
“Our goal is to revitalise the teaching profession, making it more lucrative, engaging, and appealing.”
He noted that the competition aligns with the WAEC, NECO, and JAMB syllabuses, focusing on practical applications rather than theoretical knowledge.
“The emphasis is on practical experience, moving away from purely theoretical learning,” he added.
Ochuba urged principals, headteachers, science teachers, and students to register for the competition on www.scienceteacherschampionship.com, highlighting that registration and participation are free.
He announced monthly cash rewards for participants, including ₦50,000 for the best teacher in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, and ₦20,000 for the best science students in each category. Teachers who upload science experiments on the STC platform will also receive ₦1,000 per experiment, credited directly to their E-wallet or bank account.
“The impact and effectiveness of this competition will become evident by the end of February when the first set of winners is announced.
“With seamless digital connectivity, stakeholders can monitor classroom activities and the engagement of science teachers and students across Abia,” Ochuba stated.
